If you have cable internet, you probably rent your modem from your internet service provider for a monthly fee on top of your internet plan. It's usually somewhere between $5 and $10 a month, though most ISPs are less than up front about how much their services cost.

Many providers allow you to buy your own modem and avoid those monthly rental fees. While there are obvious benefits to buying your own modem, there are still reasons you may prefer to rent it from your ISP. Here's all the information you need to decide for yourself.

Check your monthly bill for a rental fee; Comcast, Cox, Optimum, and Spectrum all add a charge, depending on your plan. Some providers say they provide a free modem in certain bundles, but they usually charge an extra Wi-Fi service fee if you use a modem/router combo unit (like Spectrum, pictured above).

If you are allowed the option to use your own modem, you could save between $60 and $120 per year by buying one instead of renting it from your ISP. Sure, you may pay $50-$100 upfront, but you will have recouped the cost of those fees within a year, and will then start saving $10 a month. That adds up over time. Just be sure your cable company actually stops charging you the rental fee, since they've been known to "forget" in the past(Opens in a new window).

There are some benefits to renting. You can trade it in when it becomes obsolete or if it stops working. Plus, you don't have to worry about compatibility or replacing the unit yourself if something goes wrong as your ISP can just swap it out for you. And again, if your ISP includes the cost of a modem in your package pricing, you won't save any money by purchasing your own.

Another factor worth considering (eventually) is DOCSIS 4.0(Opens in a new window), the newest standard that was announced in 2019. DOCSIS 4.0 promises the same 10Gbps down seen in 3.1 modems, but also 6Gbps in upstream capacity. There are currently no modems on the market that are compatible with this standard, but it's something to think about as you look to upgrade.

At PCMag, we don't rate cable modems because it's not possible to isolate modem performance from ISP speed, and we're unable to test them with every compatible ISP under the same conditions. The right cable modem for you is what's compatible with your ISP and your particular plan, and offers the best balance of price and features (not to mention a good warranty).

The best modems overall support DOCSIS 3.0 or 3.1, and are compatible with the major US cable companies, namely Spectrum, Comcast, and Cox, which is true of all the modems listed below. Most of these models cost $100 or less (excluding the DOCSIS 3.1 options), so if you're paying $10 a month to rent your modem, you'll make back your investment in less than a year.

Updated on July 10, 2022, by Maciej Grzymkowski: As is the case with many board games, Monopoly is heavily dependent on probability. Spaces that players are most likely to land on during each turn are properties that are worth investing in the most, alongside spots that can bring in steady income without the need to invest in houses or hotels, such as the utility fields and railroad stations. This article has been updated to include the probability of landing on each one of the best properties to buy in Monopoly.

Located right next to the highly profitable red set, the yellow set of spaces in Monopolyis still a viable option for players who want to rake in the middle-high rent payments from their competitors. Skilled players can take advantage of the fact that these spaces are widely considered to be some of the least sought-after spaces in the game by securing them quickly and even buying them off of other players at a discount.

Still, even after having secured the entire set, the cost of building houses and hotels on these streets combined with the relatively low probability of landing on each one of them (compared to some of the spaces further down the list) might prove to be a strategic challenge for their owners. The best approach is to combine them with the green set to turn the Jail corner into a highly lucrative area for the owner and a very dangerous part of the map for all the other players.

In fact, they rank within the top ten most-frequently landed-upon tiles in the game. This means that sooner or later, most players will stand on them. Buying up all four railroad stations will yield a $200 profit whenever another player stands on them, which is not a bad amount of money, considering the strategic location of these tiles. Not to mention that owners of all stations can travel between them for free (provided that they land on one of them first), potentially avoiding high rent payments to other players.

Contrary to the brown tiles, the return on investment of the light blue set is considerably higher. The rent (with hotels) on those properties ranges between $550 and $600. Given the proximity of this set to the START tile, with enough luck, owners can build as many as four houses per turn just with the $200 bonus received at the beginning of each turn.

Experienced Monopoly players know that chasing after the red and orange property sets will make it worth their time once they finally complete them: they are two of the most frequently landed-upon sets, and owning either one of them is a sure-fire way to regularly collect high amounts of rent from other players (unless they're really, really lucky).

Monopoly veterans may differ in their opinions about some of the other property sets and their importance in helping players win the game, but they will all agree on one fact: the orange places are the best properties in Monopoly. The reasoning behind this is rooted in the science of probability.

There are plenty of houses available in Black Desert Online, each house has its own peculiarities: in each region, the housings were built in their own style. You can rent out houses, decorate with your own furniture, and even make it a big part of your gameplay, especially if you practice lifeskills that require workspace.

This showy house is located in Duvencrune, in its heart as well. It offers plenty of free space through 3 levels (at least 50 cooking utensils would fit, haha) and four rooms as well. There are two balconies from two different levels and a gallery on the top level. The layout of the rooms is practical and could be decorated very nicely. 041b061a72
